East Cheshire National Trust Association Talk – 12th April
By Editor Girl on Mar 14, 2022
The next East Cheshire National Trust Association Talk is on Tuesday 8th February from 2.00-3.3pm at Brookdale Club, Bridge Lane, Bramhall, Stockport SK7 2AB.
Suze Appleton will be talking about the life and works of Elizabeth Raffald, a little know 18th Century entrepreneur who lived in Manchester. She wrote a recipe cookbook containing 800 recipes 100 years before Mrs Beaton.
Elizabeth gave us recipes for many modern-day dishes. For example: the wedding cake, piccalilli, and crumpets. Her book ran into nearly 40 editions, and she followed it with the first ever trade directories for Manchester. She completed all this while running businesses in catering, servant employment, a shop, and an inn. She also had 9 children. She was a powerhouse of enterprise.
Suze Appleton worked in Benefits Advice until 10 years ago. She then took a writing course and self-published works of fiction. She came across Elizabeth Raffald through a series of coincidences, and this resulted in her giving talks, writing books, and arranging a Stockport memorial to Elizabeth.
