Stockport Council is opening up the historic Covered Market Hall for monthly farmers’ markets beginning on Sunday 19th June.

Fresh produce to be found at Stockport’s farmers’ market. The farmers’ market, which will run from 11am until 3pm, has been launched by Stockport Council and popular market trader Christine Munro from the award winning Christine’s Cheshire Preserves.

The event will be held on the third Sunday of each month and will provide fun for all the family including cookery demonstrations as well as a fairground and bouncy castle for children.

Over 30 farmers’ and producers will bring homemade, baked and bread products to the market for visitors to taste and buy. Customers will also have the choice of rare breed beef, pork and lamb, a large selection of fresh fish, vegetables and fruit, as well as delicatessen products and Greek and Italian foods.

The event follows on from the successful Vintage Village event which is held on the second Sunday of every month within the Covered Market Hall.

Working in partnership with market traders, Stockport Council is developing a wider programme to encourage footfall in the town centre on Sundays, by using Market Place events to encourage visitors to come to the Hillgate and Underbanks areas as well as the rest of the town centre.

Councillor Kevin Hogg, Executive Member for Regeneration, at Stockport Council, said: “I am pleased to welcome the farmers’ market as the newest attraction to Stockport’s market place.

“As part of the Stockport Boost programme, we are hugely committed to supporting local businesses and market traders as it helps us to diversify Stockport’s retail offer and attract new shoppers to Stockport Market.  The success of the Vintage Village events has clearly demonstrated that Stockport Market can pull people in from as far a-field as Nuneaton and Huddersfield and I am sure that this new event will encourage even more people to visit our fantastic town.”

Christine Munro, from Christine’s Cheshire Preserves added:  “I am delighted to be working alongside Stockport Council to launch a new farmers’ market in the historic Covered Market Hall.

“We want to create a vibrant and exciting atmosphere selling locally grown produce which will attract a wide variety of customers, both locally and further afield.  Tasters will be on offer at most of the stalls, and you can always be sure of good quality and value for your money at our farmers’ markets.”
