Snake In The Grass features a cast of 3 women and is the second of Alan Ayckbourn’s ‘ghost’ stories, the first being Haunting Julia with an all male cast.

After more than 20 years of living in Tasmania, Annabel returns to her family home, following the death of her father, to collect her inheritance and to meet her estranged little sister, Miriam. Walking in the unkempt grounds of the run down family home – complete with dilapidated tennis-court and summer-house – she meets Alice, the hard and tough former nurse of her father.

Annabel, normally superior and imperious, receives some shocking revelations from Alice about her timid and naive little sister which, quite frankly, are unbelievable in the extreme. Alice wants a great deal of hush money from Annabel to keep these revelations hidden away from the authorities thus preventing Miriam from spending a long time as a guest at Her Majesty’s pleasure.

Alice leaves Annabel to ‘sleep on it’ telling her she will return the following day to finalise the arrangements, which are non-negotiable. Miriam, vulnerable and frightened, then appears in somewhat of a state and the sisters deliberate Alice’s accusations giving rise to even more disclosures of the recent past goings on in the family home.

Having ‘slept on the problem’ all is far from well between the sisters. Annabel starts to reveal to Miriam some of her problems over the last 20 years or so. She reveals more than her little sister expected and Miriam realises that, like herself, Annabel has been haunted by her past for some time. Alice returns to settle the arrangements and things go from bad to worse for Annabel when her little sister’s actions come as a complete and terrifying shock.

It is then the turn of Miriam to reveal her ghostly dark and shocking past to Annabel with fatal results. But it is not all over yet, not all the facts have been revealed and, at the turn of the final page, what could possibly happen that would make the past goings-on pale into insignificance?

Come to the Brookdale Theatre from May 4th to 7th to find out the truth behind this chilling tale – but don’t tell your friends the outcome and leave the light on the landing when you go to bed, just for a bit of comfort!
