Exciting First Concert to Start New Season
By webmaster on Sep 25, 2014
Stockport Symphony Orchestra is back in rehearsals preparing for the first concert of the season on 11th October at 7:30pm in the Town Hall. To kick start what promises to be a fantastic musical year, the Orchestra welcome the mighty Ewa Strusińska to conduct this first concert which opens with Mozart’s overture to his opera Don Giovanni. He famously wrote the overture on the morning before the premiere of the opera, leaving the orchestra see it for the first time at the performance.
Following this we welcome the ever popular Leland Chen to perform the Korngold Violin concerto. Korngold has the distinction of being a composer who is perfectly at home both in the concert hall and the film stage and his violin concerto is no exception: this melodic piece draws themes from films ‘Another Dawn’ and ‘Juarez’ to name a couple of examples. This concerto was the first piece that Korngold penned after the second world war as he returned to compositions other than film scores and it is full of soaring melodies and beautiful harmonies.
The second half of the concert will be Rachmaninov ‘s Symphony no.2. After a disastrous premiere of his first symphony, the harsh criticism he received left Rachmaninov unsure of his ability to write symphonies. However, with the success of the second piano concerto under his belt, this symphony was also a triumph and helped restore his sense of self worth. Romantic music does not come more romantic than this! – So join the Orchestra on Saturday October 11th for a sumptuous start to their concert season.
